While I was at the university on one of the courses I heard about Frederick Winslow Taylor and Efficiency Movement. I decided to improve how my parents’ strawberries plantation works. The idea was very simple. Take 12 DC/ 230 AC converter, PC, digital scale with RS232 interface, bar-code reader, application to read data and manage database. Thanks to my father who allowed me to experiment I put this all together. I wrote a simple application in Delphi which was reading person’s ID from a bar-code, then reading data from a scale via RS232, calculate gross weight, and insert a record in the database. At the end of a day data was exported to MS excel where wages ware calculated. The system worked for three years. Every year served about 300 people and 60 tons of strawberries.
I must say I really enjoyed those holidays.
